Cowans to sign for Telford

After being released by Aston Villa at the end of last season, Henry Cowans is on the verge of signing for non-league side Telford, according to the Birmingham Mail.

The local newspaper claims that the 20-year-old midfielder is ready to agree to terms with the National League North club after his Villa contract expired at the end last season as Cowans failed to ever break into the first-team.

The youngster had been at Aston Villa since 2012 when he signed first youth contract. The midfielder was a regular at Under-18, Under-21, and Under-23 level.

Cowans was on loan at Stevenage last seasonHe had a decent loan spell with Stevenage in League Two last season as he registered 22 appearances across all competitions, making three assists in the process as he earned his first taste of senior football.

Should Aston Villa of given Cowans a new deal?

It remains to be seen whether or not Cowans will reach his potential. He is the son of Villa legend Gordon, but it appears that the 20-year-old career will be taking a much more different route to his father’s.

The Birmingham born is very versatile and it may have been worth giving him another year on the books at Villa Park so they could send him out on another loan spell. He has very limited first-team experience and that means it may have been harsh to let him go so earlier.

However, Villa has a history of holding onto younger players for far too long because of their early potential. Take the likes of Nathan Delfouneso for example.

Is Telford a good move?

After being on the hunt for a new club all summer, it seems that Cowans may take whatever he is offered. Telford isn’t too far away from Birmingham so the switch makes logistical sense for the budding midfielder. The Bucks are in a tough league but he could soon begin attraction attention of higher teams if he plays well.

It gives him a chance to rebuild his career without having to settle in a new area. If he impresses then he could soon see himself climbing up the leagues.
